Marchionini by Four Seconds in the 50+
Sunday at GO Cross: the 50+ winner's margin fell to four seconds and changed hands, three of Saturday's eight masters winners did it again, and the 60+ podium came back in exactly the same order. September 27.
Eighty names on Sunday’s masters sheets at Roanoke and sixty-seven finishers, across the same five men’s fields and three women’s as Saturday. Three riders won the same race twice. The other five changed hands, and in every one of them Saturday’s winner was in the race and was beaten.
Results are the Sunday stage lists from the race’s own timing feed, read at 8:13 a.m. Eastern on Monday, and are unofficial until USA Cycling posts them. No ratings or ranking positions appear below; both days are now in the masters rankings, which is where the model’s view of them lives. Three masters finishers have no birth year on record and are named without an age.
The 50+ got closer. Saturday’s first four were inside nineteen seconds; Sunday’s first five were inside twenty-seven. Brian Marchionini, 53, of Silver Spring won it in 44:21, turning Saturday around: Dan Larino, 54, of Neshanic Station, New Jersey, Saturday’s winner, was second at four seconds. Scott Frederick, 53, of Raleigh was third at six, Frankie Ross, 58, of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, fourth at 20 and Eric Anderson, 53, of Indianapolis fifth at 27. Twenty-three were on the sheet and nineteen finished, all but one on the lead lap.
The 40+ swapped its top two as well. Brent Sturlaugson, 43, of Baltimore, second on Saturday, won it in 43:11. Robert Marion, 45, of Mount Airy, North Carolina, Saturday’s winner, was 13 seconds back, and Justin Jeffers, 48, also of Baltimore, crossed on the same time for third. Steven Shive, 46, of Greenwich, Connecticut, was fourth at 38 seconds and Luke Principe, 44, of Rochester sixth. On Saturday only three riders finished the 40+ on the lead lap; on Sunday nine of the ten did.
The 60+ came back in the same order. Tom Weaver, 60, of Macedonia, Ohio, won it again, in 46:25, from Carl Reglar, 65, of Bethel, Connecticut, at 2:14 and Robert Dietrick, 60, of Farmington, New York, at 4:19 — Saturday’s podium, place for place. Eleven of the sixteen finishers were a lap down — eleven, as on Saturday.
Fred Wittwer won the 70+ at 76. Third on Saturday, the Nellysford rider took it in 44:54 by 28 seconds from Saturday’s winner, Ron Kubala, 72, of Sagamore Hills, Ohio. Chuck Gillis, 76, of Pittsboro was third. Kim Butler, the other 76-year-old on Saturday’s podium, did not start.
The women’s races. Evie Edwards, 51, of Asheville won the 40+ again. The 50+ went to Denelle Grant, who has no birth year on record, 1:09 ahead of Saturday’s winner Amy Phillips, 54, of Chattanooga. In the 60+ Sharon Squassoni, 64, of Bethesda, third on Saturday, won by 2:13 from Darcy Ramsey Johnson, 65, of Old Greenwich, with Alison Weidner third.
Jeff Brown won the Cat 3/4/5 masters again, 1:29 clear of Vince Urichich, 57, of Delaware, Ohio. Brown, like Grant, is named without an age: neither turns up on the BikeReg entry list with a birth year.
Elsewhere. Ryan Popple, 44, rode the UCI Elite Men again and was thirteenth again, 5:14 down on Tofik Beshir, who won both days; Erin Gordon did not start Sunday’s elite women. Saturday’s singlespeed winner, Gordon Wadsworth, did not start either, and Kerry Werner Jr. won it by more than four minutes from Grant Fanning, 42, of Richmond.
